Reliable Handheld Automotive Diagnostics for VW and Audi Models
Beginning in the 1980s new vehicles began to be wired with a variety of computerized diagnostic systems designed to improve efficiencies, simplify troubleshooting and minimize the need for repairs. These systems produce indicators known as diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) internally, usually indicating something out of the ordinary by illuminating the "check engine"/malfunction indicator light (MIL) on the dashboard of your car. In the 1990s these systems, codes and the hardware connectors used to access them were standardized in North America as OBD (onboard diagnostics) and later OBD-II. Europe uses the equivalent EOBD, but Volkswagen and Audi vehicles also use another diagnostic standard system, VAG. Unofficially this acronym can be taken to stand for "Volkswagen Audi Group."

Everything you need for basic automotive diagnostic code reading for Volkswagen and Audis.

The Roadi RDT45 VAG basic diagnostic scan tool is specially designed to work with most Volkswagen and Audis sold worldwide beginning in 1990. If your VW/AUDI model has a 16-pin OBD-II style Data Link Connector(DTC), the RDT45 code reader will certainly work. If it has an old-style 2x2 Data Link Connector (DTC), then it depends on whether there are 4 or 3 wires connecting to the pins. If there are 4 wires, each connecting a pin, then it will work. If there are only 3 wires, leaving one pin disconnected, then it will not. To use, simply plug the RDT45 code reader cable connector into the corresponding data port in your vehicle, usually located near the dashboard or gearshift, while the engine is off. Then switch the ignition on and scroll to the right menu option users can gain access to generic and vehicle specific VAG and OBD-II codes related primarily to the engine, transmission, airbag and ABS systems that trigger MIL events. Definitions for the DTCs can be found in your manual or via the CD definitions lists in on the CD included. Additional features include a USB cable for updating your computer-based definitions list and a nylon carrying case.

High-end Diagnostic Functionality for Your Vehicles
Beginning in the 1980s new cars and trucks began to be wired with a variety of computerized diagnostic systems designed to improve efficiencies, simplify troubleshooting and minimize the need for repairs. Europe and Japan have their own equivalents of EOBD and JOBD. Automotive technicians have long utilized high-end machinery to read and decipher these codes, passing the costs on to consumers, but now automotive do-it-yourselfers can get access to this same advanced information and functionality quickly and inexpensively with the Roadi RDT61.

The RDT61 is a digital diagnostic scan tool that accesses your vehicle's onboard computer via a 16-pin connector located at the end of the device's cable. This connection also provides the device with 8 to 16 volts of power drawn from your vehicle's battery. The RDT61 also possesses optional 9-volt battery power for reading saved data away from the vehicle connection. As part of the industry-wide OBD-II standard, virtually every car, light truck or SUV manufactured and/or sold in the US since 1996 contains a corresponding data link connector (DLC) port located under the dashboard (the location of this port on vehicles manufactured in Europe or Japan may vary). By simply plugging the RDT61 into this port while the engine is off, then switching it on and scrolling to the right menu option users can gain access to codes (generic and vehicle specific) related to MIL events. All code definitions are displayed on the device's backlit 128 x 64 pixel display, ending the need to walk away from your vehicle while testing (full definitions are also available on your computer via the included CD). Some diagnostic codes can be captured as a constant stream produced by key engine sensors, while others require specific engine components to be engaged to produce data, but the functionality of the RDT61 goes well beyond this. It also captures OBD-II freeze frame data, a snapshot of the real-time data that prompts the generation of DTCs, allows for the viewing of live engine data and supports both O2 and onboard component testing, increasing insight into fuel efficiency issues and emissions controls. Together these can serve as power data points in further diagnosis of automotive issues and predict the chances of a vehicle passing state mandated emissions tests. Finally, the diagnostic systems within different vehicles may utilize different OBD-II compliant protocols as conduits connecting the various onboard networks. The RDT61 supports all these protocols, including CAN, VPW, PWM, ISO9141, KW2000, providing comprehensive analysis of your vehicle's functions whenever you want it. Additional features include the ability to retrieve vehicle ID numbers (VIN), USB functionality that allows you to update device software and DTC list via the Internet, and a nylon carrying case.

Key Features:

  • Highly reliable, accurate and durable diagnostic tool with easy-to-read backlit, 128 x 64 pixel display.
  • Works with all 1996 and newer cars, light trucks and SUVs that are OBD-II compliant (plus a few models from '94-95), as well as EOBD and JOBD compliant vehicles manufactured in Europe or Japan.

  • Reads both generic (P0, P2, P3, U0) and manufacturer specific (P1, P3, and U1) DTCs, and identifies and displays pending codes.
  • Code definitions displayed on unit screen.
  • Erases trouble codes and determines the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) status, as well as displays I/M readiness status and state OBD check.
  • Retrieves VIN (vehicle ID number) on 2002 and newer vehicles that support Mode 9.
  • Multiple language support: English, Spanish, Dutch, German, French.
  • Detects OBD-II Freeze Frame information, as well as allows for live engine data.
