The Code Reader for Heavy-duty Vehicles
Just as with cars and light trucks, the onboard computer systems built into modern medium to heavy-duty trucks and industrial vehicles internally generate a valuable array of diagnostic indicators in the form of diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's). Technicians, both on the go and in the shop, need an easy way to utilize the information these codes represent, and that's exactly what they get with the SPX 3418 OTC Heavy-duty reader.

The 3418 HD reader is able to read standard engine, transmission and ABS DTCs and display their corresponding code definitions on-screen, and is designed for use with both gasoline and diesel class 4-8 trucks. This extensive vehicle range covers everything from heavy duty full-sized pickups and recreational vehicles, to industrial vehicles like tow trucks, cement trucks, dump trucks, garbage trucks, buses, etc. In addition, the SPX 3418 includes applications for heavy-duty standard compliant construction, marine, agriculture, and other industrial diesel power plant vehicles. The 3418 HD reader comes with both a 6-pin and a 9-pin Deutsch cable for maximum vehicle compatibility, is battery powered for off vehicle use, can be updated via the Internet and utilizes a variety of important protocols including J1587/J1708 and J1939 heavy-duty standard.

    J1587/J1708 & J1939 Heavy-duty Standards
SAE J1587 is a diagnostic protocol standard developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) for heavy-duty and most medium-duty vehicles built after 1985. Up to 1995, individual OEMs used their own connectors. From 1996 to 2001, the 6-pin Deutsch was standard. Beginning in 2001, most OEMs converted to the 9-pin Deutsch. Some OEMs still use the 6-pin Deutsch. SAE J1708 is an SAE physical specification developed especially for heavy duty vehicles (trucks and buses). The protocol promoted a standard for serial communication between modules with microcontrollers. J1708 describes the physical and data link layer and is almost always used in conjunction with the application layer protocol SAE J1587.

In the early 90's, the SAE Truck and Bus Control and Communications Subcommittee started the development of a CAN-based application profile for in-vehicle communication in trucks. In 1998 the SAE published the J1939 set of specifications. A J1939 network connects electronic control units (ECU) within a truck and trailer system. The J1939 specification - with its engine, transmission, and brake message definitions - is dedicated to diesel engine applications. J1939 is supposed to replace J1587/J1708 networks. SAE J1939 has been adopted widely by diesel engine manufacturers. One driving force behind this is the increasing adoption of the engine Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which provides one method of controlling exhaust gas emissions within US and European standards. Consequently, SAE J1939 can now be found in a range of diesel-powered applications: vehicles (on- and offroad), marine propulsion, power generation and industrial pumping.

    • Class 4 8 truck coverage
    • HD J1587 / J1708 and J1939 CAN, engine, transmission/ABS coverage and more for diagnostic trouble codes

Read trouble codes in a snap. See product details

Designed to empower vehicle owners when it comes to maintenance, the Innova 3030 Diagnostic CarReader is the perfect entry-level tool for quickly revealing the cause of "Check Engine" light warnings on any 1996 and newer car, light truck, or SUV--foreign and domestic. The tool features a unique, patented all-in-one screen and a 3 color red, green and yellow LED display for quick emissions status checks. Meanwhile, the 3030's automatic refresh updates data every 30 seconds when connected to the vehicle, offering an easy way to verify repair completion. The tool communicates with all OBD II protocols, including CAN (Controller Area Network).

All-in-One Screen and One-Push Button Functions

Handheld diagnostic tools should put all the information a user needs right in the palm of your hand, but too often other models bury this data within the device, requiring you to navigate through multiple menus to find what you want. The 3030 is different. Using a combination of its patented all-in-one screen, that allows for viewing 25 pieces of vital information--all at once without having to search through multiple menus, and single-button function access, users are guaranteed quick, efficient access to data they need.

    Patented Emission Status LEDs

Over 30 states now use an OBD2 based system to check for emissions readiness, making it more important than ever to be aware of the status of your vehicle and to keep it running in top condition. With this in mind, the Innova 3030 has been designed with the ability to read the exact same emissions information as these state-required tests do to see if you will pass the first time around. Built around a simple color-coded system where Green = Pass, Yellow = Potential Problems and Red = Fail, users are able to quickly diagnose potential emission issues with the 3030. Other tool manufacturers charge over 0 for this feature alone and a separate tool has to be purchased, but the 3030 includes this with the price of purchase.

    Additional Diagnostic Resources at Innova.com

The Innova 3030 also comes with access to RepairSolutions through Innova.com. RepairSolutions allows users to take control of vehicle diagnostics by providing you with the complete solution as to why your "Check Engine" light is on. A basic report is provided free with your tool purchase, with a comprehensive analysis available for additional purchase.

    What's in the Box?

Innova 3030 CarReader with OBD2 16-pin DLC cable, CD with software, USB cable, user manual, warranty.
