High-end Diagnostic Functionality for Your Vehicles
Beginning in the 1980s new cars and trucks began to be wired with a variety of computerized diagnostic systems designed to improve efficiencies, simplify troubleshooting and minimize the need for repairs. These systems produce indicators known as diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) internally, usually indicating something out of the ordinary by illuminating the "check engine"/malfunction indicator light (MIL) on the dashboard of your car. In the 1990s these systems, codes and the hardware connectors used to access them were standardized in North America as OBD (onboard diagnostics) and later OBD-II. Europe and Japan have their own equivalents of EOBD and JOBD. Automotive technicians have long utilized high-end machinery to read and decipher these codes, passing the costs on to consumers, but now automotive do-it-yourselfers can get access to this same advanced information and functionality quickly and inexpensively with the Roadi RDT61.

The RDT61 is a digital diagnostic scan tool that accesses your vehicle's onboard computer via a 16-pin connector located at the end of the device's cable. This connection also provides the device with 8 to 16 volts of power drawn from your vehicle's battery. The RDT61 also possesses optional 9-volt battery power for reading saved data away from the vehicle connection. As part of the industry-wide OBD-II standard, virtually every car, light truck or SUV manufactured and/or sold in the US since 1996 contains a corresponding data link connector (DLC) port located under the dashboard (the location of this port on vehicles manufactured in Europe or Japan may vary). By simply plugging the RDT61 into this port while the engine is off, then switching it on and scrolling to the right menu option users can gain access to codes (generic and vehicle specific) related to MIL events. All code definitions are displayed on the device's backlit 128 x 64 pixel display, ending the need to walk away from your vehicle while testing (full definitions are also available on your computer via the included CD). Some diagnostic codes can be captured as a constant stream produced by key engine sensors, while others require specific engine components to be engaged to produce data, but the functionality of the RDT61 goes well beyond this. It also captures OBD-II freeze frame data, a snapshot of the real-time data that prompts the generation of DTCs, allows for the viewing of live engine data and supports both O2 and onboard component testing, increasing insight into fuel efficiency issues and emissions controls. Together these can serve as power data points in further diagnosis of automotive issues and predict the chances of a vehicle passing state mandated emissions tests. Finally, the diagnostic systems within different vehicles may utilize different OBD-II compliant protocols as conduits connecting the various onboard networks. The RDT61 supports all these protocols, including CAN, VPW, PWM, ISO9141, KW2000, providing comprehensive analysis of your vehicle's functions whenever you want it. Additional features include the ability to retrieve vehicle ID numbers (VIN), USB functionality that allows you to update device software and DTC list via the Internet, and a nylon carrying case.

Four sets of data are automatically recorded on the trip computer: Current, Today, Previous Day, and Tank Trip. The "current" trip restarts after the engine has been off for more than 3 minutes. The "today" trip restarts after the vehicle has not moved for 9 hours, and the data from "today" is moved to "previous day" when you restart the car, so you don't have to reset the computer every time you begin a trip. "Tank trip" resets when you fill up the tank. It can provide you with "to empty" data and other useful information, which can be viewed any time during the trip. The trip computer also integrates information from the Cost Per Mile gauge. Simply enter how much you paid per gallon or liter of fuel, and the ScanGauge will automatically calculate the cost of your trips as you drive. The ScanGaugeII features 12 individually stored parameters, including:

    ScanGaugeII features 63 backlit colors.

The ScanGaugeII is a compact vehicle computer that connects to the diagnostic connector in seconds and gives you an extensive trip computer, real time gauges and trouble code reader. It can read fuel economy as you drive, tell you how fast your friend drove your car last night, tell you when you are going to run out of fuel and dozens of other functions. Installation takes only seconds and requires no tools. It can be moved from car to car. Works on gas, diesel, propane, and hybrid vehicles.
